Away from the crowd --- the art of Jaffa Lam

Perhaps we have all had this passing thought: How can I be in the crowd and not suffocate from congestion? How can an artist conduct herself in face of market fundamentalism? Away from the Crowd is intended for anyone having thought of the possibility of being away (but not running away) from the crowd. We believe there is something about this way of conducting ourselves that can be shared as common experience, just as there is about art. The essays and dialogues tell of Jaffa Lam and artists who are her contemporaries finding an artistic language that is multiple and vivacious, and carries in itself a moral duty to the material that all artists are responsible for.

LAM Laam, Jaffa is a sculptor specialising in large scale site-specific works of mixed media sculptural installations, which are mainly made with recycled materials like crate wood, old furniture and recycled fabric. In recent years, she has been involved in many public sculptural and community projects in Hong Kong and overseas, and her works often explore issues related to the local culture, history, society and current affairs. The new community project she has started in Hong Kong is called “Micro Economy”.

Jaffa received her BFA, MFA and Postgraduate Diploma in Education at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Apart from solo exhibitions, Lam was invited to take part in many local and international exhibitions, as well as artist residency programmes in Kenya, Taiwan, Bangladesh, Shanghai, New York and Toronto, etc. Lam was chosen as one of the highlighted artists by the Hong Kong Art Promotion Office for its “Artists in Neighbourhood Scheme II 2003”. She was also the Asian Cultural Council 2006 grantee, 2007-2008 New York Urban Glass visiting artist fellow. Lam participated in the Subvision Art Festival, Hamburg in 2009 by invitation. She currently teaches at the Hong Kong Art School.
