Plastic, plastic, every where! Art exhibition by Fung Kuen Suet Michelle 《天空膠雨》馮捲雪作品展

Event Information

Plastic, plastic, every where! is a dystopian cautionary tale that tells a future where the frenzy of human plastic consumption (as in life saver donuts, telephone receiver hotdogs…) has led us past the point of no return. This global craze originates from the 2084 annual meeting of the Great Five Industrial Nations. At the meeting, imaginary country Contradictoria (in the form of a pig) proposes that if animals can learn to eat plastic, why can’t children?

This May, kukrick will house the large official portraits of the Great Five Industrial Nations delegates, floating in elegance and greeting the viewer in midair. The viewer can speculate which imaginary countries each delegate is from and the role of his/her corresponding country in the futuristic world. Fung expresses her burning concerns for the environment with her fable which was published as an illustrated book. The delicate lines and innocent images seem to outline human's irreversible damage to the environment. Her creation spans from spinning a story line and weaving together images into a published book to, now, presenting visuals from her story into an installation. The artworks are hung, interspersed in the space, to create an experiential experience for the viewer.

Screening and Talk
【Image and Narrative—Interdisciplinary Practice and Reading
“Plastic, plastic, every where!” Dialogue and Film Screening】

The genesis of the story rests in the image. Does the story stay within the image? An interdisciplinary practice often sits in the grey area of intersections and divergence. Does imagination operate differently in different medium? When one exercises imagination across disciplines, how does that translate from words to lines and colours?

❑ About Artist

Fung Kuen Suet, Michelle

Fung Kuen Suet Michelle is a visual artist and art educator whose ambitious ongoing oeuvre revolves around a grand narrative of a dystopian world set in the year 2084. With bold and unfettered imagination, subtle humour, and delicate pathos, she weaves acute observations of the early twenty-first century into an absurd, fantastical landscape populated with plastic-eating humans, flying elephants, and islands floating in the sky, and frequently alludes to literary influences such as Orwell and Swift. Her works present a fictional geopolitical map of a bizarre future, one impacted by changes in the Anthropocene. Fung’s works span a broad range of media including text, books, drawing, painting, printmaking, installation, performances and short films, each chosen carefully for its inherent historical and experiential implications.

Her most recent exhibition, Polluta, Floating Artist Colony in the Sky (2018) at Pro Arts Gallery in Oakland, California, USA, was the non-profit gallery’s first show by a Hong Kong artist and one of the most successful in its forty-year history. Her award-winning book Tin Hong Gaau Jyu 天空膠雨 (Joint Publishing, 2017) tells a cautionary dystopian tale of a future where a frenzy of plastic consumption (i.e., lifesaver donuts, telephone hotdogs) has led humans past the point of no return. Her work Plastic, plastic, every where! received the Grotto Award, Hong Kong Baptist University (2015) and Award of Excellence, Fourth Greater China Illustration Awards (2016), Young Writer's Debut Competition (2017) and 50 Best Books for Secondary Students (2018.)
