Product Information

On the midnight of June 7th, 1989, a few days after the massacre of June 4th at Tiananmen Square in Beijing, there was a riot on Pitt Street in Hong Kong. More than seven thousand people gathered on the street, spreading the chaos with all sorts of disturbances, such as throwing objects, burning cars and even looting.
The police force was called in and 19 rounds of tear gas were fired. The morning after, most public memorial and response events to the massacre (an estimated 1.5 million Hong Kong people, would have joined) had been called off, ensuring that the violence wouldn’t happen again. Some claimed that the protesters who had started the riot were from the Mainland. Regardless of the suspicions that circulated, this riot has kept Hong Kong people from holding a big memorial to the June 4th event for 25 years...
Pitt Street Riot is an action theater based on the documents and oral histories collected from the Yau Ma Tei neighborhood. The theater created is based on the real story, letting fragments from the past reappear on the streets of Yau Ma Tei. The theater consists of three storylines – a left-wing old man brushing past the ‘riot’; two lovers missing a date because of the riot and a secondary school student who tries to form an action in school to support the movement…
